Yeah, I know. I've
heard more lawyer jokes than you have. I've heard them all –
I'm an attorney. Not just any attorney either; I'm a medical
malpractice lawyer. You've heard us called ambulance chasers. You've
probably heard us called worse than that. Still, I maintain that what I
do is necessary. If you had seen some of the negligent things happen
that I have seen, you'd probably think twice before cracking the next
joke at the expense of a medical malpractice lawyer.
For example, there's the last time I saw a hospital amputate the wrong
leg of a client. Yes, you read it correctly, I said last time. It has
happened to more than one of my clients. Many people find the horrible
handwriting of doctors to be a humorous subject, but ask any medical
malpractice lawyer and they'll tell you that it isn't always funny. I
don't remember the exact statistic, but the figure is in the thousands
every year. Thousands of times that the wrong limb is amputated
– either the doctor scrawls something illegible and the
surgeons start cutting, or someone somewhere fails to read something or
double check something else, and viola! The left arm comes off when its
supposed to be the right. Still laughing at the expense of a medical
malpractice lawyer?
This last one was something else, though. I've never seen a hospital
with such nerve. My client was not even planning on contacting a
medical malpractice lawyer, but the hospital acted in such a disgusting
manner that he couldn't even stomach it anymore. They actually tried to
blame the whole thing on him. He was severely obese, and suffering from
acute diabetes, and they claimed that the unhealthful appearance of his
entire body was the reason that they were unable to severe the correct
limb. These are trained medical professionals, and they can't remember
to cut off the right leg instead of the left because the guy is fat?
Without a medical malpractice lawyer, he would have not only suffered
the tragedy of losing both legs, but would have been unable to receive
any compensation for it, besides. Although there are some medical
malpractice lawyers who abuse the system, no one deserves to suffer
because of the incompetence of their doctors. I'm not ashamed to be a
medical malpractice lawyer. I help my clients, and I keep doctors safe
and responsible, and I'm proud of that.
